Diners leave Kentucky Applebee's waitress racist note instead of a tip

RADCLIFF, Ky. (WDRB) -- Being in the service industry isn't easy. Applebee's waitress Jasmine Brewer and her mother, Regina Boone, talk about it a lot.

Last week, they both saw how ugly it can get.

A table of four came into her Radcliff restaurant. Brewer handled the group like she does all her customers.

"I asked him how they was doing, went through my little rundown," she said.

It became clear to her pretty quickly that something was off.

"As I was talking to them, they barely said anything to me," Brewer said. "They didn't want to tell me their drinks. They didn't want to tell me their food. One person ordered for the whole table."

She kept it professional and brought the food to the group in a timely manner. But, when those customers walked out the doors, and Brewer went to look for a tip, there was no money on the table.

"Instead of a tip, I got a note saying 'we don't tip black people,'" Brewer said.

It was scribbled on a napkin. The message was upsetting. Brewer told her mom about it shortly after finding it.

"When she first texted me, I looked at my husband and said, 'I'm tired of this,'" Boone said

She took to Facebook to share a picture of the napkin, and her daughter's story, and the response was incredible. People from across the country wanted to make sure Brewer got her tip.

"I was like, 'That's not necessary. That's not what it was for,'" Boone said. "They said, 'yes, but do you have any kind of pay account? We want to give her the tip.'"

The wronged waitress ended up getting more than $175 for her work at that table that night. Most of the donors were strangers.

"I didn't even want my momma to put it on Facebook," Brewer said. "I was embarrassed about it most of all. When I see people actually did support me, that let's you know there's more good people in the world than bad."

She said it also proves racism never wins.

If the customers who left the note try come back, management will kick them out of the restaurant immediately.
