LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 1,000 adults with disabilities -- and just as many volunteers -- took part in a heartwarming event Friday night when Southeast Christian Church held it's annual "Shine" prom.
The event pairs adults with special needs with volunteer escorts so they can have an evening of food, fun and dancing. It's a special prom for adults with special needs.
"To see the smiles on their faces and the joy that they have -- for many of them this is the only night of the whole year that they really feel this way," said Pastor Dave Stone.
Sandra Lamar has been attending for five years.
"It's like a real senior prom," she said. "I didn't go to the one when I was in high school. This is like my senior prom."
Guests were paired with a partner for the night. Sandra's partner, Barbara Steadmon, volunteers every year.
"Sandra helps me to realize whats important in life," said Steadmon. "She teaches me a lot... how to love unconditionally."
The girls could also get their makeup and hair done before heading into the party. Once inside, guests could sing karaoke, play games, eat dinner, and show off their dance moves.
Another prom event is held in February.
