LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The YMCA of Greater Louisville will honor student leaders and community advocates Saturday night during its 47th annual Black Achievers Awards Celebration.
The event will take place Feb. 28 at the Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport Expo Center. Tickets are sold out.
The annual ceremony recognizes high school seniors who have completed the YMCA’s Black Achievers program, which provides mentoring, academic support and career exploration opportunities for students in grades 9-12.
James R. Allen, vice chair of Baird, will be named Distinguished Achiever of the Year. Organizers say Allen has long supported youth development initiatives and educational opportunity in Louisville.
The Youth Achiever of the Year award will go to Kennedi Wathen, a senior at Louisville Male High School. A four-year participant in the program, Wathen has held several leadership roles at her school, completed more than 120 hours of community service and plans to pursue engineering.
Dr. Brian Yearwood, superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools, will deliver the keynote address.
