LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The new cover of Louisville's annual visitor guide was revealed Thursday morning, marking 100 days until the 150th Kentucky Derby.
Jaylin Monet Stewart's design was selected for the cover titled "Divine Timing," showing the first jockey to win the Derby, Oliver Lewis, and his horse.
Lewis was a Black man and a former slave.
"It makes me so emotional that God has chosen me, and my ancestors have chosen me, to tell a message we still need to this day," Stewart said Thursday. "... we are still fighting some of the same battles."
There are 10 roses in the background of the portrait of Lewis to represent every Black jockey who has won the Kentucky Derby. And each color of the roses is the color of their winning silks when they won.
Louisville's Visitor Guide highlights some of the top attractions and restaurants in the city. Officials said the cover will be a meaningful addition to the Black Heritage in Racing exhibit at the Kentucky Derby Museum.
