LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) With the Kentucky Oaks and Derby just a week away, local businesses are racing to keep up with a surge in demand for all things fashionable.

From vibrant fascinators to bold bow ties, retailers across Louisville are seeing a spike in foot traffic and sales as visitors and locals alike search for the perfect race day outfit.

Carol Hampton, co-owner of the iconic Pix Shoe Store on Preston Street, said the influx of shoppers has been overwhelming — but in the best way.

“It’s been phenomenal. It’s wonderful, sometimes a little overwhelming,” Hampton said. “I get people from everywhere. They’re flying in Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. I’ve got a stock room already sold. People are gonna pick up Thursday, Friday, Saturday — from all over the world.”

Before the horses hit the track, it’s hats, heels and high fashion that are grabbing the spotlight.

“I just make them and sell them. I don’t know. I just keep them flowing,” Hampton said of the in-demand accessories.

On the other end of town, the staff at Well Suited Men’s Clothing on Hikes Lane are also seeing the rush.

“I’m looking for a sport coat for Derby,” customer David Meredith said. “It’s just that time of year. It’s time to get a little bit out of the box.”

Store owner Mitch Nelson described the season as “bananas” — but good for business.

“It’s super busy and it’s fun,” Nelson said. “I’ve been here 10 years. I have people that come here every year. They don’t bring anything, and they allow us to put their outfits together.”

And it’s not just clothing stores cashing in. Derby week also brings big business for local restaurants and liquor stores.

As the countdown continues, it’s clear Louisville is ready to put its most stylish foot forward.
