LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41)---The Milton-Madison Bridge continues to show signs of wear and will soon be replaced.

On Thursday, we found Indiana State Police set up by the bridge. Some drivers were being stopped, and their vehicles were being weighed.

Last month officials lowered the 15-ton weight limit, to 3-tons. Due to the continued deterioration of the bridge and the ongoing replacement, vehicles over 6,000 pounds can't cross for the time-being.

Authorities are now on the look-out.

"Large pickup trucks, SUV's, some suburbans, larger SUV's," says Dave McKalip, Master Trooper with Indiana State Police.

One of the trucks authorities stopped was 550 pounds over the limit.

"So I now have to take the route to Markland Dam if I want to come over to Indiana," says Lindsey Alford.

Another truck was 1,400 pounds over the limit.

"Sooner or later they were gonna be cracking down, so they did," says Kevin Lanham.

Some drivers reached out to WDRB, confused about how authorities are enforcing the 6,000 pound weight limit.

Some thought officials were going by the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, which is the weight limit set by the automaker that is located inside your car.

"The GVWR on my truck says 7,000 pounds, but we don't know if they're going to go by that sticker or what the truck actually weighs, which is less than that," says Roy Browning, who stopped to get his truck checked out.

Authorities say, the GVWR can be deceiving.

That's why they're now simply focusing on how much your car actually weighs, combined with having fuel, cargo, and passengers.

They say, as long as drivers remain under 6,000 pounds, they won't be breaking any rules by crossing this bridge.

Authorities with Indiana State Police say they are working with Kentucky State Police to make sure they are both on the same page, so there is no confusion as to who can and can't cross the bridge.

They are also working out how to deal with people that violate the temporary weight limit.

Another inspection on the bridge is set for next week.

Meanwhile, the bridge will temporarily close from April 25-29 as the existing bridge approaches are replaced with temporary ramps.
