LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new report from Readers Digest says some precut and prepackaged goods at the grocery store are much more expensive than they should be, so trimming some of those items can save serious money on food bills.
People are looking for ways to decrease grocery bills, but a new report says some things might be a waste of money.
It's tough to decide how many vegetables to buy and putting together children's lunches can be a lot of work. But Readers Digest said avoiding some prepackaged items can reduce grocery bills.
Precut foods can cost three times the price. For example, a three-pound bag of apples costs around $5, but that same amount of pre-cut apple slices can cost about $20.Â
Produce that is out of season can also be costly. Strawberries costs around $1.99 a pint in the summer, but $5 a pint in the winter.
Spices can cost $5 a tin in the supermarket, but less than a dollar at Aldi.Â
The Readers Digest report also says individual servings of rice and macaroni and cheese can cost as much as a full box. Also, a single packet of popcorn can cost as much as a 30-ounce bag of kernels.
People should avoid individual packets and split up larger packages to reduce their grocery bills.
