LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville staple just steps from Churchill Downs said Kentucky Derby week business took a hit this year - thanks to Mother Nature.

Wagner’s Pharmacy, which has served locals and out-of-town visitors for more than a century, is a traditional stop for many during Kentucky Derby festivities. But this year, managers said cold temperatures and rain kept afternoon crowds away, especially from the tents set up outside the restaurant.

“It was cold and it was rainy and it was, ‘Let’s get out of the infield and just go to our cars,’” said Jennifer Oller, Wagner's Pharmacy general manager. “We did have some people stay and hang out with us, but of course not nearly as much as in past years.”

Each year, Wagner’s closes its main restaurant after 2 p.m. and hosts food and cocktail tents in the parking lot. Much of the proceeds go to charity, making the drop in turnout especially disappointing.

Managers said many people left Churchill Downs early — even before the official start of the Kentucky Oaks and Derby races.

However, breakfast - the most popular time at Wagner's - was a success as some days had a 45-minute wait for seating.

"The rain was not our friend," Oller laughed. "But we had such good mornings. Very good mornings."

Wagner's Pharmacy is located at 3113 South Fourth Street and is open Tuesday - Saturday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
