SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The opening of the Shepherdsville Aquatic Center has been delayed, but residents won't have to wait much longer to use some parts of the facility.

The city broke ground on the $25.5 million facility on Joe B. Hall Avenue in 2024, with the entire facility expected to open July 1 of this year.

Shepherdsville Mayor Jose Cubero, however, said the opening is now delayed until the fall.

"We've had a couple dates that they've had inspections, had to reconstruct some things, it's very complex," Cubero said. "If something gets delayed, it delays the other schedules of their part to be taken care of."

The facility will feature six indoor pickleball courts, an indoor pool for competitive and recreational swimming and several outdoor aquatic features.

According to Cubero, the indoor pool and pickleball courts should be able to open sometime this fall. The outdoor pool, though, isn't expected to be open until the spring.

"I'm the first person, I'm the most anxious person to see this open, but I want to make sure it's a quality product," Cubero said.

The indoor pool will have eight lanes and seats for 300 people. Cubero said this is so the city can host regional swimming events which would bring people from outside Bullitt County.

The outdoor pool will have an area for babies to play, a splash pad, a four-foot pool and two 26-foot slides.

The entire facility is part of a $40 million project that also includes revitalizing Shepherdsville's parks and streetscapes. The plan includes an updated town square and upgrades to the park like playgrounds, courts and a disc golf course.

"You're gonna have a lot more people that want to come here, stay in a hotel, eat at the restaurants, stay a day and enjoy the pool," Cubero said.

Even though the city will have to wait a little longer to enjoy it, Cubero said he hopes the center will be a positive addition to the community.

"It's going to be a really big deal for the community," Cubero said. "I'm really stoked."
