LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 29-year-old woman was identified Friday as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash Tuesday on National Turnpike.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office said Haley Hayes died of blunt force injuries in the crash just before 11 p.m. Tuesday on National Turnpike near Southside Drive.
Investigators said witnesses told them a vehicle driven by a man with a female passenger "was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed," before he lost control, veered off the road and crashed into the pole.
The driver and passenger got out of the vehicle after the crash, and the man ran away on foot, leaving Hayes on the ground. Witnesses told police she was alert when emergency responders arrived.
EMS took her to UofL Hospital in downtown Louisville, where she died a short time later.
No other vehicles were involved, and no description of the man who left the scene was released.
The LMPD Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.
