LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --Â Police say driver left scene of crash on National Turnpike Tuesday night that killed female passenger.Â
In a release, Louisville Metro Police said the crash happened at a railroad crossing around 10:40 p.m. on National Turnpike near Southside Drive.
That's where LMPD's Third Division responded to a reports of a crash involving a single vehicle that hit a railroad crossing pole.
Investigators said witnesses told them a vehicle driven by a man with a female passenger "was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed," before he lost control, veered off the road and crashed into the pole.
The driver and passenger got out of the vehicle after the crash, and the man ran away on foot, leaving the injured woman on the ground. Witnesses told police she was alert when emergency responders arrived.
EMS took the woman to UofL Hospital in downtown Louisville, where she died a short time later, according to a news release. Her name has not been released.Â
No other vehicles were involved, and no description of the man who left the scene was released.
The LMPD Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.Â
