LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jefferson County Public Schools bus driver was arrested over the weekend for assault and strangulation.

The charges against 48-year-old Rarlando Ramsey stem from an alleged incident in the Parkland neighborhood early Saturday morning and are not associated with his job.

Court records indicate officers responding to the scene said they saw a man on top of a woman next to a dark colored SUV. After separating the pair, investigators learned Ramsey and the woman (identified as his girlfriend in court documents) began arguing after leaving the Double Deuce bar at Broadway and 26th Street around 4:30 a.m. May 18.

The woman told police Ramsey started hitting her and pushed her down to the ground after they left the venue where they had been arguing. She told police she bit him in an attempt to get away while they were both on the ground. That's when she said Ramsey "put his arm around her neck causing her not to be able to breathe."

Ramsey appeared in arraignment court on Monday, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. The judge set his bond set at $2,500. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 29.

Monday afternoon JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan released the following statement concerning Ramsey's status as a bus driver: "As we follow our policies and procedures, Mr. Ramsey will not be driving a school bus."
