LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are warning about scammers calling Kentuckians claiming to be police officers.

LMPD said scammers tell the victim that a warrant has been issued because of a missed court date, they didn't show up for jury duty or an overdue fine. The scammers claim that the people will be arrested by the United States Marshal Service if they don't pay immediately.

LMPD said the callers will demand that the fines or fees be paid with money, credit cards, gift cards, payment apps or cryptocurrency.

"Victims have lost large sums of money and it causes anxiety and fear to those individuals who are receiving these calls," LMPD posted

Police said people should hang up if the scammers call.

"Don't be intimidated into providing personal details or financial information," LMPD said. "LMPD, Louisville Metro Police Foundation or another agency is not going to call you and threaten you with arrest. Just hang up if you get a call like that."
