Dead body found in burned car possibly tied to Henry County shooting

SMITHFIELD, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police is looking into a possible connection between a dead body found in a burned car Tuesday morning and a shooting on Monday night in Henry County.

According to court documents, 20-year-old Gregory Heightchew is accused of shooting at two men Monday night at a home on Lake Jericho Road. One of the two men’s car was found miles away, burned, with a dead body inside.

"The vehicle itself is also very degraded, so that is creating some difficulty in confirming the identity," KSP Trooper Steven Dykes said.

A citation says Heightchew pulled the trigger several times, but the gun didn’t fire because the safety was on. The two men ran from the house, but Heightchew continued to fire. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and wanton endangerment.

A warrant for Heightchew’s arrest says one of the two men who was shot at was found and was not harmed. However, the second man has still not been found, but his car was found burned out in a rural area of Six Mile Creek Road on Tuesday morning. A dead body was found inside that has not yet been identified.

"We don't ever want to jump to any conclusions," Dykes said. "It's certainly something that is being looked at very closely to see if there is a correlation."

A second suspect, 22-year-old Joshua Jackson, was also arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence in connection to the incident. An arrest report states his mother told police that Jackson “burned his clothes … then took a shower using alcohol on his body.”

Both men are being held at the Oldham County Detention Center.
