LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky residents have more time to file their taxes this year.
The normal April 15 deadline was extended because of the February flooding that ravaged parts of Kentucky. The eastern part of the state took the brunt of it, but the Internal Revenue Service is offering deadline relief for the entire commonwealth.
The extension applies to individual income tax returns, business tax returns, and any payments originally due between Feb. 14 and Nov. 3.
Experts like Sally Campbell, a CPA at at Harding Shymanski in Louisville, caution residents not to take the extension if it isn't needed.
"We have a lot of clients who file in multiple states and in jurisdictions that are not covered by this relief," she said.
"So, in most cases, we are proceeding as normal and trying to get all of our worked prepared by April 15, as we normally would. That said, if someone does have a large balance due for a 2024 return, we do discuss the option of paying that closer to the Nov. 3 deadline."
The extension does not mean Kentucky residents can waive a 10% interest charge on payments made after April 15.
