LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- How do things work, and why do they work that way? Kids are getting a lesson in engineering at the Kentucky Science Center in downtown Louisville.
Friday, the Center on West Main Street hosted its annual Engineering Days event.
"It's an annual science celebration we do where we're celebrating the wide world of engineering," said Ginny Hoyt, with the Kentucky Science Center. "We're trying to get kids excited about the content, we're trying to get them open to the idea of the process of learning and the things they can explore."
During Engineering Days, kids will build their own skills and meet the experts who "imagine, design, and create the world around us," the Science Center said.
"My favorite part is being able to translate our engineering concepts to all the young visitors that are coming to the Science Center today," said Dr. Tom Lucas, with the Purdue Polytechnic Institute in New Albany. "It's a really cool opportunity to see them engaged with how things are made and what's inside the products that are all around us all the time."
Local engineering professionals from local partners, including the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, C&I Engineering, LG&E/KU and Louisville Metro Government Engineering Services, were on-hand for Friday's Engineering Days.
"We have a variety of STEAM professionals in the building," Hoyt said. "A wide array of engineers who are bringing in all these hands-on opportunities for students to explore different fields."
Admission for Engineering Days is free with a regular ticket to the Kentucky Science Center. The event continues Saturday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"Engineering is a very broad field, and so the chance to just kind of learn more about what is out there, and explore what is out there, it may not be the one thing you pursue, but it gets you excited about learning those sorts of things, and it may open your eyes to a new career path," said Hoyt.
The Kentucky Science Center is located at 727 West Main Street. It's open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
