LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new mobile van is delivering books to underserved children in Louisville.

The Louisville Free Public Library unveiled its Children's Bookmobile on Wednesday as books were shared with students at Engelhard Elementary School in Old Louisville. The new mobile library will deliver books, have library story times, sensory experiences and innovative programming.

According to a news release Wednesday, the van will visit day cares, YMCA programs, community centers, faith-based organizations and schools, along with visiting parks, block parties and more.

"Having a new bookmobile will not only allow us to provide more continuous and dependable service to the community, but because it is larger than our current vehicle, we are able to carry more books and serve more children," Library Director Lee Burchfield said in a news release. "With the help of donors to the Library Foundation, we are excited to strengthen our commitment to ensuring that children in our community have access to books and other resources that will help them be successful in school and life."

The Library Foundation and JBS Louisville worked to gather donations for the project. According to a news release, the Library Foundation raised more than $315,000 to pay for the vehicle, its customization, books, technology and other materials.

"The arrival of our new bookmobile is a reflection of the incredible power of community support," Chandra Gordon, executive director of The Library Foundation, said in a news release. "Together, with a special thanks to the exceptionally generous contribution from JBS, we've transformed a dream into a reality. This bookmobile isn't just a vehicle; it's a mobile hub of knowledge, ready to bring the world of books to every corner of our community."
