LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Firefighters in Bullitt County spent the week training for difficult emergencies like collapsed buildings and trench rescues.
Despite periods of heavy rain earlier this week, all of Bullitt County's fire departments, including Shepherdsville, Zoneton, Nichols, Mt. Washington and Pleasure Ridge Park, have been undergoing advanced training for technical rescue scenarios.
Although those types of rescue situations are less frequent, they're often life-threatening to the victims as well as first responders.
That's why firefighters have been undergoing specialized technical training is being offered for situations like rope rescues, structural collapses, confined space rescues, surface water rescues, high angle rescues and trench rescues.
In addition to hands-on training, firefighters have also been undergoing classroom training in the Heavy Rescue class.
The curriculum included methods for stabilizing straight, L, and T trenches using both inside and outside wale systems, as well as techniques for patient packaging within trench environments, according to a post on the Shepherdsville Fire Department's Facebook page. Participants also learned the principles and practical applications of buttress systems were demonstrated.
The final training scenario was scheduled for Sept. 26, where different rescue situations are created to test the knowledge and skills of the students.
The hands-on training sessions were held at 485 Old Ford Road in Shepherdsville.
