LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Free tax preparation is returning to Louisville this season — and for thousands of residents, it could mean hundreds or even thousands of dollars back.

Since 2001, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has helped Louisville residents file nearly 165,000 tax returns, money that often goes toward rent, utilities and groceries.

Last year alone, volunteers prepared more than 8,400 returns, generating an estimated $11 million economic impact for local families.

"Louisville’s VITA program has been a cornerstone of financial empowerment for 25 years,"Ā Mayor Craig Greenberg said. "We’re proud to celebrate this anniversary by continuing to offer these essential services."

This year, 16 VITA sites across Louisville will again offer free, IRS-certified tax preparation for individuals and families who earned up to $70,000 in 2025. Services include electronic filing and help claiming key tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

Residents can schedule appointments or find site hours onlineĀ to take advantage of the free service.
