LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County District Court Judge Erica Lee Williams is retiring, so she can focus on her health.
Williams said her doctors advised her to retire, because of her ongoing cancer battle. She announced the decision on her social media.
She was appointed to the bench in 2009 and then elected to a full-term in 2010. Williams also served as the presiding judge of the county's Teen Court.
Williams plans to step down at the end of the year.
Here is the statement she posted:
"Update: It is with heart break and profound sadness to announce that effective Dec 31, 2023, I am retiring from the bench.
I have proudly served Jefferson County for 14 1/2 years and it has truly been the highlight of my professional career. However, after many discussions and consultations with my medical team both at Norton and MD Anderson it has been determined that I should retire.
To my judicial family, I love you and will always be cheering you on. To the citizens of Jefferson County, thank you for your confidence and support as your district court judge.
To my husband and caretaker Jason, thank you for your unwavering love, constant support and continuous care. You are simply amazing and I am still alive because of your tenacious advocacy for me and unrelenting efforts. Together we can do anything!
To my daughter, Jacqueline, I hope mommy has shown you to never ever give up. You can accomplish anything your heart desires. We can do hard things.
To my family and friends - I love you and thank you for loving me just the way I am. Thank you for helping my dream of becoming a judge turn into a reality that far exceeded my expectations.
I will continue fighting and I will continue to maintain a positive attitude. I’m down in the dumps about this but it won’t last- I won’t let it. I am blessed and thankful to be here and I will continue to cherish every single day!
With love and gratitude,
Judge Erica Lee Williams
