LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Hundreds of Jefferson County students took the stage Wednesday for a youth-led showcase blending music, storytelling and a message of violence prevention.
The T'D Up Showcase was held Wednesday morning at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, bringing together about 700 students, educators and chaperones from more than 18 schools in Jefferson County Public Schools.
Presented by Hip Hop Into Learning in partnership with Butler Traditional High School’s Black Student Union, the event featured student performances of original songs written, recorded and rehearsed throughout the school year.
"We feel it is especially important that when you lead youth, you must let them speak for themselves," said NyRee Clayton-Taylor, co-founder of HHN2L. "Self-expression is vital to keep them engaged."
The program also centered on youth violence prevention, featuring community leader Stachelle Busey and Ms. Rose of the ACE Project, who shared her story about losing her son to gun violence.
Antonio Taylor, co-founder of HHN2L, said music helps meet students where they are.
"We must be authentic to reach our youth today," he said. "They are exposed to a lot more than their parents. So, we are meeting them where they are and giving them opportunities."
Participating schools included Butler Traditional High School, Fairdale High School, Eastern High School, Waggener High School, Valley High School, W.E.B. DuBois Academy and others across the district.
