LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city of Jeffersontown celebrated the opening of the Tri An Monument on Monday, a permanent tribute to veterans of all countries who fought in the Vietnam War for nearly 20 years.
Several generals and high-ranking officials from the Vietnam War came to the dedication at Veterans Memorial Park on Taylorsville Road in Jeffersontown.
The $2.3 million memorial has eight concrete columns, each one symbolizing an allied nation helped fight against the communists. The multimillion-dollar monument is the first of its kind because there's never been a memorial honoring the Vietnam veterans who the Vietnamese-American community led in the war.
"Most Americans were there for 12-13 months and then most went home," said Maj. Gen. Allen Youngman, who served for the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. "There wasn't a rotation date for Vietnamese soldiers. They fought literally for the existence of their country."
People who visit the monument will see images of historical events, like the two exoduses of Vietnamese people fleeing the Communist regime in 1954 and after 1975.
