LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --Â Many people are frying their Thanksgiving turkeys, but what do you do with all the leftover oil?
Many people just pour it down the drain or throw it out, but there's a better way to get rid of it without harming your home or the environment.Â
"Absolutely do not put it down any type of drain in your house," MSD Spokesperson Sheryl Lauder said. "The ground temperature is about 55 degrees, and no matter how much hot water you follow that grease with, it's going to reach a point, probably somewhere in your yard, that it will solidify."
Lauder said oil build-up can create a clog in your pipes, which could lead to a back up.
"You do not want a sanitary sewer back up in your home," She said.Â
Allowing the oil to cool in a container and throwing it out is an option, but its one that can still harm the environment.
"I've been in the sustainability world for 30 years, and that just doesn't sit right with me," said Todd Bluechel, who works for Oil Tech, a locally owned and operated company collects used oil from hundreds of restaurants, schools and businesses.
For the next week, the company is offering its services to residents for free.
"They would tell us where they are, where they live, and then we would tell them a location nearest to where they live where they can drop off the used cooking oil," Bluechel said.
Oil Tech will process the oil and turn it into bio-diesel, which can be used as fuel.
"We're turning a waste into something beneficial that can be used," Bluechel said.Â
Oil Tech asks that you strain out the oil before putting it into a container to bring to a drop-off site. The company's phone number (502)-424-1654. People wanting to drop off their oil can call the number to be directed to the closest available drop off location.Â
