LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It can be a spooky time of year to check out cemeteries in the Louisville area, but it's also a time to learn about them.

Saturday morning, the Louisville Free Public Library hosted a tour of the Portland Cemetery.

The Portland branch of the library is closed, but still took folks out to the cemetery to tell them about its history.

Some of those who attended learned about loved ones and ancestors, but also about the stones in the cemetery. For others, it was an interesting day to learn about a piece of their neighborhood.

"We are kind of history nerds and we moved here five years ago. We love the neighborhood, so anytime someone is doing something historical we're always interested," said Aaron Stone.

More than 8,000 people are buried in the Portland Cemetery, with the first person being buried there back in 1828.
