LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than a dozen recruits were sworn in Friday with the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
This year's class includes 19 new corrections officers that report to work at the jail on Sunday.
Kennith Wynn is one of the new graduates. He said this is something he has wanted to do since childhood. He said he hopes to help make a difference in the lives of young men and women by being a positive role model.
"It has been my dream for a while now. Something I really wanted to do. I have multiple family members that are corrections officers and something that they pushed me towards, and I have two boys, and I want to be something that they can look up to when they get older," he said.
Metro Corrections continues to hire and train recruits to address a staffing shortage inside the jail.
Staffing issues played a role in safety and security lapses that led to the deaths of several inmates over the last few years.
Corrections has said it's making improvements in retention and recruitment by expanding its recruiting efforts to Fort Knox and Fort Campbell, advertising on radio, hosting job fairs and utilizing billboards in multiple zip codes.
