LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) --Â Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer is out with a new book, and he writes about how he almost committed suicide.
Meyer, a Greensburg, Kentucky native, risked his life dodging enemy fire to rescue the remains of fallen friends in Afghanistan. He also saved the lives of 15 Afghan soldiers.
But triumphant times led to terrible times, with Meyer attempting to kill himself: "So, I pulled over to the side of the road and I just pulled one of my guns out and I just put it to my head and squeezed the trigger. And...there wasn't a round in it.  I don't know. I have no idea, but, obviously somebody had taken it out...and it sobered me up . And it was like, at that point in time, I told myself, I have to figure this out. I have to figure this out because if I would have killed myself, that was the most, you know, selfish thing that I could ever do."
Last year Meyer received the Medal of Honor, making him the first living Marine to receive the medal for heroism in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
His new book "Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War" is now in stores.
