Malachi Toney had a touchdown catch and Marty Brown added a TD run for Miami. CJ Carr, in his first start for Notre Dame, finished 19 of 30 for 221 yards and two touchdown passes and an interception.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Marcus Freeman has expressed confidence in CJ Carr's potential despite Notre Dame's 27-24 loss to Miami on Sunday. Carr, a freshman quarterback, threw his first collegiate touchdown during the game, showcasing his playmaking skills. Although Carr had an uneven performance, he nearly helped the Fighting Irish rally from a 14-point deficit. Freeman believes Carr's high ceiling and strong preparation will lead to future success. The game plan aimed to create easy decisions for Carr, but adjustments are needed to better involve running back Jeremiyah Love. Carr replaces former quarterback Riley Leonard, who was drafted by the Colts.

Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer used his brand of “Beamerball” to pull away from the school where his dad, Frank Beamer, originated the style of play that emphasizes turnovers and big plays on special teams. ATLANTA (AP) — Virginia Tech coaching great Frank Beamer showed up for the Hokies’ season opener on Sunday against South Carolina, which is coached by son Shane Beamer, wearing Gamecocks black. Frank Beamer's choice didn't surprise Brent Pry, the current Virginia Tech coach. Pry knew the elder Beamer would have to support his son. At last month’s ACC Football Kickoff, Pye was asked about the opening game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium testing Frank Beamer’s conflicting loyalties. Pry said the elder Beamer, who coached Virginia Tech for 29 years, loves the Hokies “an awful lot.” Pry added, “but he loves his son first.”
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson star wide receiver Antonio Williams headed to the locker room after limping off the field in the first quarter against No. 9 LSU. His status for the remainder of the game was unclear, but he did not return for the fourth-ranked Tigers’ next possession. Williams is a second-team preseason Associated Press All-American. He had two targets but no catches before heading the sideline and going straight to the medical tent. He was checked out and then proceeded to the locker room for more tests with the Tigers leading 3-0. He caught 75 passes for 904 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris left the game early in the third quarter after a helmet-to-helmet hit. The North Texas transfer is the Cavaliers' only experienced passer on the roster.
