UNDATED (AP) — The college football schedule looks better in Week 3. Last week was marked by three upsets and a lot of blowouts. Six Top 25 teams combined to beat FCS opponents by an average of 58 points and six others beat FBS opponents by at least 31. Only two ranked teams will play FCS opponents this week but there are 12 other games where the ranked team is at least a three-touchdown favorite. Big games are No. 15 Tennessee at No. 6 Georgia, No. 18 South Florida at No. 5 Miami and No. 16 Texas A&M at No. 8 Notre Dame.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten’s lackluster schedule this week exemplifies a problem facing the conference. Not enough teams are testing themselves outside of league play. Six Big Ten schools are facing Championship Subdivision programs this week. One-third of the league's 18 members aren't playing any nonconference games against Power Four schools or Notre Dame this season. Michigan, Southern California, UCLA and Wisconsin are the only Big Ten teams that don't have an FCS school on their schedule.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois’ football stadium will be known as Gies Memorial Stadium after alumnus and philanthropist Larry Gies made a $100 million donation to the school’s athletic department. The school announced Tuesday that the gift is the largest in the athletic program’s history. Gies’ name also is on the university’s College of Business. Gies is making the gift in memory of his late father, Larry Gies Sr., a United States Army veteran. Memorial Stadium, which turned 100 years old in 2024, originally was named in honor of the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions believe more big moments are coming from three new transfer portal additions. Wide receivers Devonte Ross, Trebor Peña and Kyron Hudson were brought in to bolster a position group that’s seen almost constant turnover since 2022. The trio is getting as many opportunities as possible to build chemistry with quarterback Drew Allar through the first three weeks of the season. It’s a stretch where past transfers failed to take flight.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Nebraska deputy athletic director Kristen Brown has been appointed to serve on the 12-member NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee. Brown fills the committee position vacated by new SMU executive deputy athletic director Colleen Sorem. She previously held administrative positions at Texas A&M and Maryland. Brown played basketball at Northern Illinois and earned her master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Recent changes in college football are prompting some long-time college coaches to more eagerly pursue NFL opportunities. One of them is Saints first-year defensive backs coach Terry Joseph, who says he loved working in college football for most of the past 19 years. But he left the Texas Longhorns because of how recruiting had changed since recent rule changes liberalizing player movement and payments. Joseph and other long-time college coaches say those changes have largely ended the days when lifelong relationships could be built out of years of mentoring and developing players. They say college coaches now constantly must monitor whether players they'd successfully recruited previously are looking to leave for better financial or playing-time opportunities.
