Need food assistance? Here's a list of food pantries and resources in the Louisville area

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A federal food aid program that helps about one in eight Americans buy groceries stands to be paused Nov. 1 because of the government shutdown.

Food pantries in Kentucky and southern Indiana are working to meet increased demand from people impacted by the loss.

Here is a list of local resources if you or someone you know needs food assistance. If you know of an organization or pantry working to provide food in the WDRB viewing area, please email the information to webteam@wdrb.com. We can add it to the list.

Dare to Care Food Bank: Provides emergency food and USDA commodities through partner locations, including Community Action Partnership offices and Neighborhood Place locations. They also run programs like Kids Cafe for children and have mobile pantries for drive-thru food distributions.

Can you help? Dare to Care always needs assistance working to end hunger. It accepts donations of money or food. To find out more, click here.
A Find Food interactive map is on the Dare to Care website. You can enter your zip code and find resources close to your location, days of the week you can get food and the type of assistance you need including pantries, drive-thru pantries and meals for seniors, teens and kids.

Catholic Charities of Louisville Sister Visitor Center: The SVC Choice Food Pantry is located at 2235 West Market St. Operating hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you do not live in the neighborhood and prefer to visit a pantry closer to you, please call Dare to Care at 502-966-3821 to find the food pantry that serves your neighborhood.

Food shopping can occur once a month and you do not need an appointment.
If it is your first-time visiting SVC, you will need your ID.
If you are shopping for someone else you will need your Id, their ID and a signed Proxy form giving you permission to pick up their food order.
The proxy forms are available in the Pantry.
Regular Hours:
- M-F 10 a.m. -2:30 p.m.
Closed on the First Tuesday of the Month

South Louisville Community Ministries: Their service area encompasses all of zip codes 40214, 40215, 40118 and 40209, 40219 West of I-65 and those families in 40208 who live south of Eastern Parkway/Industry Road.

If you need food from the SLCM choice pantry, please call 502-367-6445 beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a same day appointment Monday-Thursday. This is only available once a month but allows individuals to select your own canned goods, frozen meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, and even certain household and hygiene items.

Salvation Army of Louisville: The Salvation Army of Louisville has launched an emergency food campaign amid a surge in requests for food assistance. Requests have increased three to five times the usual amount in recent weeks, officials said, with many people seeking assistance for the first time.

The Salvation Army of Louisville is located at 911 South Brook Street, Louisville, Ky. 40203.

Red Shield Food Pantry
The Pantry is open for Food box pick up on Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
Please call the Center of Hope at 502-671-4900 to reserve a food box.
Photo ID is required at the time of pick-up (Driver's License or State ID Card). In addition, they will accept a Social Security Card, Passport Card or Birth Certificates for children.

Red Kettle Cafe
To combat hunger in our community The Salvation Army Red Kettle Café provides a hot breakfast and dinner to anyone hungry in the community.
Breakfast is served daily from 6:45–7:30 a.m.,
Dinner is served each night for women and children at 4:45 p.m. followed by the men at 5:15 p.m.

The Salvation Army Louisville has started an emergency food drive to help people impacted by the delay in SNAP benefits. To make a donation, click here. Checks can also be mailed to: The Salvation Army of Louisville, 911 S. Brook St., Louisville, Ky. 40203.

Shively Area Ministries: Operates the Honey and Pop Food Center, which requires proof of address for zip code 40216 residents. The center is part of the Dare to Care network of food pantries.

Honey and Pop Food Center Hours:
- Monday-Thursday: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to closing)
- Closed on Fridays
- You don't need to make an appointment for food, but you must bring the following:
- Proof of address in the Shively Area Ministries service area (40216 ZIP code)
- A picture ID for all adults in the household
- Children - bring a healthcare card, birth certificate, or report card for each child in the household
- Please ask about availability at check-in if you need feminine hygiene products or have special dietary needs.
