NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- The New Albany Police Department is investigating after a man was shot and killed inside a home Tuesday evening.
Police Chief Todd Bailey said Joshua Gonzales, 38, was found shot to death at a home in the 150 block of Cherry Street, which is off State Street near the PC Home Center. Officers went the home around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on a reported shooting.
"I am kind of shocked that something went on like that last night," said Gary Quarles, who lives nearby.
Quarles said the area is usually quiet, and he moved to New Albany to get away from violence across the river.
"I used to live in Louisville, but I moved over here 11 years ago. And to be honest with you, I love it," he said. "There's more violence over in Louisville, Kentucky, than here. I've never heard of too much going on over here, so I come over here to try it, out and I love it. And I stay over here."
According to Bailey, Gonzales is New Albany's first homicide victim of 2021. He said in 2020, there were two homicides reported in the city.
Bailey said investigators believe all parties involved have been identified and interviewed, and there is no risk to public safety.
"Fortunately, incidents such as this are rare in our community," Bailey said. "New Albany is a safe city with little violent crime. I am proud of the hard work of the officers of the NAPD and am confident all details will be discovered."
The department's Criminal Investigations Division is handling the investigation, which remains ongoing.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear and it is unknown if Gonzales lived in the home. Bailey said no additional information would be released by police. The Floyd County Prosecutor's Office said no charges have been filed yet, but they are reviewing the case.
