LA GRANGE, Ky. — A well-known Oldham County swimming spot is entering a new chapter. The former Falling Rock Quarry has been sold and will reopen under a new name: Bluegrass Spring.
The new operator, Noah Doranth, said taking ownership of the property feels surreal.
"A dream come true," Doranth said. "I've always wanted to be a park ranger since I was a little little kid, and this is basically my own little private park back here."
The quarry is located at 2201 Fendley Mill Road and the entire property is about 30 acres.
Doranth said he first visited the quarry as a customer and never expected to own it. That changed when the property was listed for sale for $2.75 million earlier this year. The Doranth family closed on the property in late September.
"We came out, walked the place, and we kind of had a little team huddle afterwards, and we're like, okay, this is a really special opportunity," Doranth recalled. "I feel like we'd be fools for passing it up."
Changes are already in the works for the property, including new furniture, repainted buildings and fresh branding. New ownership is hoping to create a more natural, relaxed atmosphere.
“We're hoping for more of a professional and more laid back feel,” Doranth said.
The summer season will remain Memorial Day through Labor Day because of Kentucky’s weather, but Doranth said he hopes the quarry can become a year-round attraction during the off-season.
"In the fall, having fall festivals and craft fairs," he said. "In the winter, having Christmas lights put up and decorations put up and having people drive through here."
Some things will remain the same, however, including the quarry's 18 and up requirement and prohibiting alcohol.
He said the family hopes to eliminate past issues with vehicle searches by moving parking off the water’s edge and shuttling visitors in.
"We're gonna redo our parking structure so that people don't need to park or won't be able to park right on the water," he said. "That way we don't need to search people's vehicles. We just need to search any personal bags."
The family plans to reopen Bluegrass Spring next Memorial Day weekend, with cleanup and renovations already underway.
