Pet cobra removed from Shelby County home due to large size

SHELBY COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Shelby County had to remove a woman's pet Cobra after it became too large.

It's illegal to own dangerous animals in Kentucky without a permit.

A bite from this type of cobra can kill a person in less than an hour. However, its venom is extremely important to medical research.

"There are drugs currently on the market that came from snake venoms. One of the best known is actually for high blood pressure that millions of people around the world benefit from. Without the snakes that wouldn't be in existence today," said Kristen Wiley of the Kentucky Reptile Zoo.

The cobra was placed at the Kentucky Reptile Zoo in Slade.

Its owner was cited for importing or holding prohibited dangerous wildlife.
