LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville road crews are trying to get the word out about street sweeping so cars don't get towed.

Metro Public Works started a street sweeping pilot program in Old Louisville on Tuesday.

Crews are using more communication like text alerts and social media posts before they sweep city streets. In addition, neighbors will start getting notices a week in advance and see new, bright orange flyers around the sweeping areas.

Crews said street sweeping is not just for looks.

"Street sweeping is important for a lot of reasons," Pete Flood, with Metro Public Works, said. "It impacts the sewer line, it impacts the drainage system and it's a safety issue. Obviously if you have ponding water because the drains are blocked, that can become an issue for motorists that are coming down the roadway."

Cars have to be off the street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day of sweeping.
