Jefferson County Public Schools stewards an enormous $2.2 billion annual budget. The school board oversees the administration of these funds and the personnel who spend them. Together, they spent $188 million more than they received. This is indisputable.
In their last meeting, the board voted on some expense cuts to address this shortfall. When it was over, they hightailed it out the door to avoid the media. Even our usually-available Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood fled through a back door while questions were being asked of him. It was a cowardly retreat by all. These officials may believe they are not accountable to the media, but the only reason the media exists is to be your advocate. When you can't attend a meeting, the board answers to you through the reporters they avoided.
The JCPS board does not have the luxury of spending your money and evading your questions. It may even be an unpleasant part of the job, but no one was drafted into service on this board. Every member eagerly campaigned for their seat. They sought the power of the office so they can't duck tough questions, especially when it's uncomfortable. Accountability is not optional.
