LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) --Â A huge bust in Frankfort lands 14 people in jail -- and the search is not over, as police hunt for three more.
It took a year and a half long investigation and multiple agencies, including U.S. Marshals, to bring the drug ring down. Police and other agents have been watching the drug ring for a year and a half.
Using surveillance and undercover drug buys, the drug ring was finally arrested Tuesday. "By no means would I say this would completely alleviate the drug problem or the drug trade in the Frankfort area," said Major Fred Deaton with Frankfort Police, "but we do hope it puts a significant dent in it."
Officers took pictures of the suspects, including photos of the extensive tattoos many of them have.
Police had enough evidence against these fourteen people to move in, and make the arrests. The group is known as "The Memphis Crew," simply because many of them were originally from Memphis, Tennessee.
Police say they trafficked many drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, and prescription pills. "A good deal of these drugs were coming outside of the central Kentucky area and actually out of Kentucky," said Deaton.Â
During the investigation, police confiscated drugs and $50,000 dollars cash.
With the Memphis Crew off the streets, authorities hope to see less crime all around, even though three members are still at large. "A good deal of your burglaries, of your thefts, of your check frauds, will be the result of an involvement of drugs at some point," said Deaton.Â
Police say Alastair Couch was part of the Memphis Crew, but was already in prison, convicted of a 2010 murder in Frankfort.
More charges could come including possible charges of engaging in organized crime.
