LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Transportation Security Administration officials are advising on the most effective ways for travelers to get their dogs and cats through airport security.

For most airlines, small dogs or cats can fly in the cabin with their owners, however the pets must be in a carrier that can fit under the seat.

When going through airport security, TSA officials say pets must be removed from their carriers and metal items, such as leashes and collars, must be taken off the animals. The pets must then be carried through a metal detector.

"A lot of times people will have their own bags, as well as the dog carrier and it will be a busy time. What happens in that case is they may put the dog through the X-ray. It's very important for people to stop and take stock of what they're doing," said Mark Howell, a TSA spokesperson. "We do not want those animals to go through the X-ray machine."

The rules for larger pets depend on the airline, so it's suggested that travelers check with the airline before traveling.
