LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville's Brandeis School of Law will present U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with the Brandeis Medal next week.
UofL President Kim Schatzel and Brandeis School of Law Dean Melanie B. Jacobs will present the award Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Louisville Marriott Downtown on West Jefferson Street.
University officials said the event begins at 6 p.m., with the medal presentation and dinner at 6:15 p.m. There will be a question and answer session following the dinner with Jacobs and Sotomayor.
According to UofL, the Brandeis Medal recognizes recipients chosen for their "devotion to economic, social or political justice and for advancing the cause of public service in the legal profession."Â
The university said Sotomayor's "commitment to public service reflects many of the values for which Louis D. Brandeis is most known and serves as a wonderful model for Brandeis Law students and its community."Â
Sotomayor has served on the Supreme Court since August 2009 after being nominated by former President Barack Obama as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
The medal is the "highest honor" given by the Brandeis School of Law. Sotomayor will be the seventh Supreme Court justice to receive the medal, following Harry Blackmun, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Sandra Day O'Connor and John Paul Stevens.
Tickets for the ceremony have already sold out.
