LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A routine traffic stop turned into a terrifying shootout in Lexington when Trooper Jude Remilien was shot in the leg, and the suspect went on to fatally shoot two women before being killed by police.

According to Kentucky State Police, the incident began when Remilien pulled over a vehicle after its license plate triggered an alert. Body-worn camera footage shows the trooper calmly asking the driver, Guy House, for his license and ID before the situation quickly escalated.

“Can you roll down the back window … what’s going on bud?” Remilien asked. “You have any ID on ya? Go ahead and put the car in park …”

Moments later, House opened fire from the driver’s side window. Remilien dove to the ground as bullets struck near him, one hitting his leg. In the chaos, House fled the scene, abandoning the truck and carjacking another vehicle while authorities say the area around Blue Grass Airport erupted into panic.

Video shows Remilien crawling and staying low to the ground, as the driver who had been with House assisted him. Two nurses, Jessica Alexander and Taylor Hall, rushed to provide first aid while the suspect sped away.

“Help please … bleeding from the leg, tourniquet … yes please,” the trooper said on the scene, according to body camera footage. The nurses worked to stop the bleeding until Lexington police arrived and guided an ambulance to the location.

House then drove across Lexington to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he opened fire on several people, killing Beverly Gumm and her daughter Christina Combs. Their husbands were also shot, but survived. Police later confronted House, who was shot and killed during the standoff.

Remilien was transported to a Lexington hospital and is recovering. In a statement, he praised the quick actions of those who helped him.

“My family and friends have been a tremendous source of support. The good samaritans who didn’t hesitate to act at the scene saved my life,” he said.

Kentucky State Police honored the two nurses and Lexington police officer Adam Arnold for their heroic efforts.

“Finally, to the entire community, thank you for every prayer, letter, and word of encouragement,” Remilien said. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
