LA GRANGE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The subject of alcohol has people in La Grange split, just days before a controversial vote Tuesday.
There's not much time left for voters who say they're weighing the risks and benefits of making alcohol more readily available in local restaurants.
While some people are worried it could lead to more drinking in La Grange, others say it would mean huge business for smaller restaurants.
Alcohol is currently served only in restaurants that seat 100 people or more.
That could soon change with a yes vote Tuesday to allowing alcohol to be sold at several liquor stores, and at smaller restaurants like Rebecca Kimbler's Serendipity gift shop and cafe.
"We've been waiting for it for a long time," Kimbler said.
But, should a vote soon pass, allowing alcohol to also be sold at restaurants in the city that seat 50 people or more, supporters hope for an increase in sales for the business.
"We've been open for dinner for quite awhile, but since we don't have the liquor, we don't have beer or wine, we don't get a lot of crowd at dinner time." Kimbler said.
"We're gonna want to put a beer garden out back, and have a grill going on the weekends and stuff. I think it will help us," Lillian Bayer, Serendipity co-owner, said.
Some residents worry about the possible change that would allow more places to serve alcohol, and the addition of several liquor stores.
"To have 3 packaged stores, only encourages the additional purchase and use of drinking and liquor," said Old ham Co. resident Mary Rocker.
The subject has people split.
"I believe it might prevent accidents from people going into Louisville to buy liquor and coming out again, or maybe going in to drink in Louisville and on the road back out," said La Grange resident Elsie Carter.
Officials with Old ham County Tourism say residents will receive postcards either Saturday or Monday reminding them about the vote and special election on Tuesday.
