LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Protesters interrupted Mayor Craig Greenberg's weekly news conference Tuesday while carrying a red banner that said, "STOP Steve Poe's Data Center."
The protesters yelled, "Greenberg, Greenberg you can't hide. We need you to pick a side." The protest was in reference to the proposed west Louisville data center. Protesters can be seen holding the rolled-up banner in the audience before making their way to the front of the room.
Security quickly surrounded Greenberg as protesters left the room.
The situation can be viewed below:
The proposed 1.6 million-square-foot hyperscale data center would sit on 150 acres along Camp Ground Road in west Louisville, near Rubbertown. Land clearing at the site has been underway for more than a year.
The Camp Ground Road data center is expected to eventually use roughly 400 megawatts, enough to power about 400,000 homes.
The planned facility's location on Camp Ground Road was partly chosen because of its proximity to major power and water infrastructure, including nearby high-voltage transmission lines. The site is expected to support advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence systems.
Greenberg addressed the protesters when he returned to the podium.
"We're always appreciative of action and energy and activism," Greenberg said. "I know those individuals are advocating for what's another very important issue that our community is dealing with respect to data centers."
In June, the Louisville Metro Planning Commission announced newly drafted regulations that would ban hyperscale data centers in Louisville and would set strict rules for smaller developments.
