LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A mariner died Friday, Feb. 27, while working on a barge in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
In an update Tuesday, Utica Fire & Rescue said crews were dispatched around 2:26 p.m. Feb. 27 to the 5800 block of Utica Pike for a reported industrial accident requiring a rescue.
When first responders arrived, they found a worker trapped between a barge and a working platform. Officials said the man suffered severe crushing injuries.
Firefighters were able to free the worker, and he was taken by Heartland EMS to a trauma center. However, he later died from his injuries.
Additional crews from Jeffersonville Fire Department assisted at the scene, along with the Clark County Sheriff's Office and Utica Police Department.
Fire officials said the release of information was delayed out of respect for the victim's family, friends and coworkers.
Authorities haven't released the victim's name.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley said March 1 that it was investigating the incident, according to a statement.
