There are a lot of UK fans who are ready to fire their football coach Mark Stoops. He had a disappointing year of 4-8 and then capped it off with an embarrassing loss to Louisville.

Why would this year be a disappointment for a school that has historically been a below average football school? The joke is if Vanderbilt isn't available, everybody in the SEC would like to play Kentucky for homecoming.

It is true that, under Stoops, UK has never been in the College Football Playoff, never won the SEC title game and has never even won the SEC East.

But Mark Stoops shouldn't be a disappointment. He is not a great coach but he's not horrible either. He's just average. In his 11 years at Kentucky, his record is a middling 77-73. Average. His teams have finished ranked in the top 25 only twice, but that's actually pretty good for Kentucky football, which, before Stoops, hadn't been ranked in the final poll since 1984.

Granted, he is paid like a great coach, but that's not his fault. You wouldn't say no to the money either if someone offered it.

Based on Kentucky's commitment to football — and compared to the standards of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and teams like that — where else could Kentucky realistically expect to be?
