Everyone loves a good conspiracy.

One popular theory suggests that Russia is masterminding our national decline, using fake news and social media bots to stoke American rage. On the surface, it makes sense. If Russia can't defeat us on the battlefield or outpace us in the global economy, their best bet is to shatter our internal cohesion. They know the old truth: "United we stand, divided we fall."

But look closer at the fractures in our society. The hardest-working agents of division aren't sitting in a bunker in Moscow. They're sitting in the halls of Congress. The Democrats and Republicans we elected have abandoned the national interest for a "party-first" blood sport. According to them, the opposition is not just wrong — they are unconscionable and perverse. Every failure is the other side's fault. Every success is claimed exclusively by their party.

When was the last time you heard a politician praise a good idea from the other party? When did an elected official last tell us to lower the temperature and remember we are Americans first? Who was the last politician who told you that compromise is the smart course?

Instead, they find a thread of resentment and pull until the fabric of our nation unravels a little more. By exploiting our fears for their political gain, they're making a mockery of the "United" States. One day, if we're divided beyond repair, it won't be because of any foreign enemies. Our own short-sighted, self-serving politicians will blame each other, never seeing the irony in that.

I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my Point of View.
