The Trump administration is ordering a dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs in the federal government. But if the goal of DEI is equity and inclusion, why are so many conservatives opposed to it?

I had to do some homework to better understand why.

Supporters of DEI say opposition is simply racism, but it’s much more complicated than that.

Conservatives tend to prioritize individualism and meritocracy over group identity and redistribution of resources. They argue that DEI initiatives undermine these and can emphasize our differences and divide us further.

Some conservatives believe that speech codes and mandatory diversity training, suppresses viewpoints and stifles conversation by enforcing ideological conformity.

DEI initiatives that involve affirmative action in hiring processes are often seen as government interference in private enterprise. Successful business people see the value in bringing diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives into their company. They just don’t want the government requiring them to hire someone for reasons other than merit.

Some raise concerns about potential reverse discrimination where more qualified job candidates may face discrimination in the name of diversity and equity.

Does racism play a role in opposing DEI? I’m sure it does for some, but opposition seems to stem from concerns about the role of government in shaping social norms.

DEI programs are not a monolith—just as opposition isn’t. There’s a wide spectrum of what DEI can look like, from helpful inclusion efforts to what some see as government overcorrection. I’m not sure why it has to be an “all or nothing” approach. Like most things in life, moderation is probably the best approach.
