Hurricane Melissa has left widespread destruction across Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. Mud, roofless buildings and water-logged debris dominated the landscape. At least dozens of deaths are known to have occurred, but the destruction has limited what information can be obtained from hard-hit areas. Melissa hit Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record and was still a major hurricane when it hit Cuba. The U.S. and others were sending aid supplies. Jamaica was trying to reopen airports to aid flights. Melissa had winds near 100 mph late Wednesday and was forecast to affect the Bahamas overnight into Thursday.
25 people have died in southern Haiti after a river flooded by Hurricane Melissa burst its banks, mayor says.
Authorities in Texas say a baby is expected to make a full recovery after it was pulled from under a vehicle that had flipped during a crash. Body camera footage released by the Fort Worth Police Department shows an officer running toward the overturned car Thursday morning. Both the mother and child had been ejected. The officer rallied bystanders at the scene to lift the car just enough to pull the 1-year-old to safety. The child was unresponsive at first, but resuscitation efforts paid off and the child eventually began to cry. Police said both the mother and child were expected to make a full recovery.
Police say at least 46 people have been killed in a highway crash in western Uganda after two buses collided while trying to overtake other traffic. The crash early Wednesday also involved two other vehicles. Several others were injured in the crash that happened after midnight local time on the highway to Gulu, a major city in northern Uganda. Police initially gave the death toll as 63 in a statement, but later revised it down to 46, saying some people found unconscious at the crash scene were actually still alive. Fatal road crashes are common in Uganda, where roads are often narrow.
A passenger bus in northeastern Brazil has crashed into a sand embankment and flipped, killing at least 17 people. Local authorities reported the accident on Saturday. The incident occurred in Saloá, Pernambuco, and the bus was heading to Brumado in Bahia. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but the driver tested negative for alcohol. Bahia's governor expressed condolences and support for rescue efforts. Traffic accidents in Brazil claimed over 10,000 lives in 2024.

Voters in Portugal have cast ballots in local elections, focusing on the mayoral race in Lisbon. Mayor Carlos Moedas, leading a right-of-center coalition, faces Alexandra Leitão, a law professor from the left. The election follows a streetcar crash on Sept. 3 that killed 16 people, including 11 tourists, sparking public outcry. Moedas rejected blame and refused to resign. Despite the crash, many voters are more concerned with issues like housing and trash collection. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, focusing on potential mechanical failures rather than political responsibility.
Federal regulators have opened yet another investigation into Tesla’s so-called full-self driving technology after dozens of incidents in which the electric vehicle maker’s cars ran red lights or drove on the wrong side of the road, sometimes crashing into other vehicles and endangering drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a filing dated Tuesday that it has 58 incident reports of Tesla vehicles violating traffic safety laws while operating in full self-driving mode. In reports to regulators, many of the Tesla drivers said the cars gave them no warning about the unexpected behavior. The probe covers 2.9 million vehicles, essentially all Teslas equipped with full self-driving technology

Authorities say the 76-year-old’s SUV crossed several lanes before hitting a parked car along the highway in Malibu. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says Simmons was then transported to a hospital. Kiss retired from touring in 2023 but plan to play in Las Vegas in November.
The attorney of the late Kyren Lacy, a former LSU football player who was accused of negligent homicide for his alleged role in a fatal car crash last year, is questioning his involvement in the deadly wreck. New surveillance footage of the crash has sparked renewed national attention in the case. Lacy's attorney said video shows that the athlete was too for away from the crash to be considered responsible. Police maintain that Lacy's reckless driving triggered the chain of events that lead to the collision. Lacy, who had declared for the 2025 NFL draft, had been booked on negligent homicide, felony hit and run and reckless operation of a vehicle. In April, Lacy died of an apparent suicide.
