Forecasters say Tropical Storm Lala has formed in the Pacific Ocean and a hurricane warning has been issued for the Big Island of Hawaii. The National Hurricane Center says the storm could become a hurricane and bring rain to the Hawaiian Islands starting late Friday as well as high winds and dangerous surf. A hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaii County and a tropical storm watch is in place for Maui County including the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe. The Miami-based center said Thursday that Lala was 455 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and about 670 miles east-southeast of Honolulu with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph while moving west-northwest.

Typhoon Noul has weakened to a tropical storm as it moves inland after making landfall in southern China. Chinese weather authorities expect heavy rain to hit parts of Guangdong and Fujian provinces. More than 801,000 people were relocated for safety in Guangdong as of Sunday, according to China's official Xinhua News Agency. In Hong Kong, at least 21 people were injured during the typhoon. Around 350 flights were canceled at Hong Kong's airport on Sunday. Noul is the third typhoon to hit China within a month and the strongest so far to make landfall in the country this year. Separately, at least 10 people were killed in a flash flood in northwestern China on Sunday, which hit a scenic area in the province of Gansu.
Tropical Storm Genevieve has strengthened into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center in Miami reports it has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane. Genevieve's center is about 500 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, moving west-northwest. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but swells from the storm are affecting parts of Mexico's southwestern coast. Meanwhile, Hurricane Fausto has weakened to a Category 1 storm. It is moving toward the Hawaiian Islands and could still generate dangerous surf.

Tropical Storm Bertha brought heavy surf and some flooding to southern Louisiana and Texas as it came ashore on the Gulf Coast before it was downgraded to a tropical depression. The National Hurricane Center says wind gusts of tropical storm force were still possible along the upper Texas coast Thursday evening. Heavy rain into the evening may trigger isolated flash flooding. No deaths or significant damage have been reported since Bertha formed Monday in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm made landfall for the first time Wednesday as it grazed the Louisiana coast. It came ashore again Thursday near Galveston, Texas.

Storm surge up to 3 feet is possible, as well as heavy rain. Bertha is expected to weaken as moves toward Texas. The storm earlier forced beach closures in the Florida Panhandle and along the tips of Alabama and Mississippi.
