Protesters defied heavy security measures Thursday in the latest show of strength by a movement posing a major challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Thursday’s demonstrations followed overnight clashes with police using tear gas and batons. Known as the “Cockroach” protests, the movement was sparked by alleged leaks in competitive entrance exams for medical colleges and government jobs. It has expanded to include demands for government accountability, unemployment and economic opportunity. The protests have become a significant expression of dissent in India.
