Opening statements have begun at the Las Vegas trial of a man accused of orchestrating the killing of Tupac Shakur. A prosecutor told jurors Monday that while few have been willing to speak about the 1996 shooting, Duane “Keffe D” Davis is the “one person who has a hard time being silent.” Davis was charged with murder nearly 30 years after the drive-by shooting. Prosecutors say he provided the gun to the person who killed Shakur. Davis published a tell-all memoir in 2019 that revived the cold case. His attorney argues the book was fictionalized to make a profit Davis has pleaded not guilty.

Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been postponed indefinitely. His lawyers are seeking to have the case dismissed on double jeopardy grounds after Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges last week. Judge Gregory Carro issued an order Monday canceling the Sept. 8 trial and giving the Manhattan District Attorney's office until Oct. 9 to respond. A hearing is set for Dec. 10. Mangione admitted to stalking and killing Thompson in 2024. Federal prosecutors are seeking life in prison, though guidelines suggest 24 to 30 years. Mangione's lawyers argue he's being punished twice for the same conduct.

The Supreme Court has again rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a $5 million jury verdict in favor of writer E. Jean Carroll. The jury in the New York civil suit found Trump sexually abused Carroll in the mid-1990s and later defamed her. The Republican president’s lawyers wanted the court to reconsider a June decision declining to hear his appeal. It’s unusual for the court to grant such requests. Trump paid the judgment shortly after the court declined to take up the case in June. Carroll is a former advice columnist who testified Trump attacked her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in 1996. Trump denies any wrongdoing.

The defense has begun calling witnesses in the trial of Lindsay Clancy. The prosecution rested its case Monday after three weeks of testimony in the trial of the Massachusetts mom who has admitted to killing her three young children. Clancy’s mother and sister were among witnesses called by the defense. Clancy's lawyer says she shouldn't be held legally responsible for murder because she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis when she killed her children before trying to kill herself. Prosecutors say Clancy planned the killings and contrived to get her husband out of the house on errands.

Of the thousands of lawsuits Meta faces over child safety on its platforms, none may be more consequential than one going to trial this week in California. States are seeking extensive financial damages that could, in theory, total as much as $1.4 trillion, plus changes to how the company operates Facebook and Instagram. The lawsuit accuses the social media giant of contributing to the youth mental health crisis by knowingly and deliberately designing features that are addictive. The trial set to begin Tuesday in federal court in Oakland, California, features four of the states as plaintiffs — California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey.

The BBC has asked a U.S. court for help getting documents and testimony from U.S. President Donald Trump's family in connection to his $10-billion defamation lawsuit against the broadcaster. Trump filed the lawsuit in December, accusing the BBC of defamation and deceptive practices. The case centers on a 2024 documentary that allegedly misrepresented a speech Trump gave on January 6, 2021. Lawyers for the BBC argue that Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. have relevant knowledge of Trump’s intentions in giving the speech. The BBC apologized for the edit but denied defamation. A trial is provisionally set for February.

The trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis for the murder of Tupac Shakur begins Monday in Las Vegas. Davis, 62, is accused of orchestrating the 1996 shooting of the iconic rapper. Prosecutors allege Davis provided the weapon used in the attack, which was reportedly an act of retaliation. Shakur was shot multiple times while riding in a car with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. Knight survived, but Shakur died six days later. The trial is expected to last about a month, with dozens of witnesses, including Knight, potentially taking the stand. Davis has pleaded not guilty.

Luigi Mangione’s guilty plea to federal stalking-to-kill charges has raised questions about how it’ll affect his state murder case and what his lawyers might do to prevent Mangione from spending the rest of his life in prison. In a stunning turn, Mangione pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court on Friday to a pair of stalking charges and admitted he killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Neither Mangione nor his lawyers said why he pleaded guilty and why he decided to do so now, but they gave some clues. Mangione’s lawyers have filed paperwork seeking to have the state case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds.
