A line in the dirt. The beat of a drum. A red flag falling. That’s how the first Kentucky Derby started. Well, it actually started before that, long before 13 colts and two fillies lined up to contest the first Kentucky Derby at the brand-new Louisville Jockey Club racing grounds in May of 1875.
