From a round of golf with Scottie Scheffler to private dinners around Miami and a splashy event at Carbone, the new Cadillac Formula 1 team was everywhere as it made its United States racing debut. The American-owned team used the Miami Grand Prix as its homecoming. Its two cars were drenched in a bespoke livery, the merchandise tents were packed and the mood was festive as Americans finally have a team they can embrace. The trick now for Cadillac is persuading its new fan base to stick with the team as it makes a slow crawl through the F1 season.
Kimi Antonelli has won the Miami Grand Prix for his third consecutive Formula 1 victory as the 19-year-old Mercedes drivers continued to show he’s a legitimate championship contender. Antonelli started from the pole Sunday but had a slick start on a damp surface of the Miami International Autodrome. Threats of heavy rain led F1 to move up the start of the race by three hours, and there was an early morning heavy thunderstorm with lightning strikes directly over the Hard Rock Stadium, but it had cleared by the time the event began.
It was less than 14 months ago that Cadillac’s frustrating push to enter Formula 1 finally came to an end and the team was approved to compete in the global motorsports series. The team has completed three races already but its biggest debut comes this weekend, on American soil, at the Miami Grand Prix. Cadillac F1 markets itself as the only true American team in the European-dominated series. For its first race in North America, Cadillac debuted a special livery. The design integrates a stars and stripes motif in Cadillac’s signature black and white color scheme.
